An féidir leat beagán cainte a dhéanamh faoi do chuid ama san Ollscoil? Rinne mé an tArd-Dioplóma sa gCumarsáid Fheidhmeach in 1998 -1999. Bhain mé mo bhunchéim sa Ghaeilge agus Fraincis amach ó Choláiste na Tríonóide i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bhí mé sa tríú bliain den chéim nuair a seoladh TnaG, ar oíche shamhna 1996. Bhí mé i mo rúnaí ar an gCumann Gaelach agus d’eagraigh muid cóisir mhór d’scailt TnaG sa Fleet trasna ón gcoláiste agus bhí an-oíche ann. Chuaigh cara liom, Róisín Ní Chéilleachair go Gaillimh chun tabhairt faoin gcúrsa cumarsáide nuair a chríochnaigh sí an chéim agus is mar gheall uirthi go raibh eolas agam faoin gcúrsa agus gur chuir mé isteach air. Ba é Rónán Ó Dubhthaigh a bhí mar Stiúrthóir ar an gcúrsa ag an am, suaimhneas síoraí lena anam. Bhí an-bhliain againn ar an gcúrsa, chaith muid mí ar an gCeathrú Rua mar chuid den chúrsa. Bhí an-bhéim ar oiliúint ar ghnéithe praiticiúla a theastódh sa saol oibre. Ba é an ‘cúrsa cumarsáide’ mar a ghlaodh muid air an cúrsa le déanamh an t-am sin le post a fháil sna meáin. Bhain mé an-taitneamh as an modúl Dlí na Meán le Marie McGonagle, agus as Léiriúchán Teilifíse le Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, Micheál Ó Catháin agus Brían Ó Donnchadha. D’fhoghlaim muid cén chaoi le clóscríobh freisin ar an gcúrsa, scil atá an-úsáideach sa saol oibre agus nach mbeadh foghlamtha agam murach an cúrsa cumarsáide. Rinne mé taithí oibre tar éis dom an cúrsa a chríochnú sa seomra nuachta in RTÉ i nDomhnach Broc faoi stiúir Phádhraic Uí Ghaora. Rinne mé cairde saoil ar an gcúrsa agus casann muid ar a chéile go minic. Tá go leor againn ag plé le saol na Gaeilge ar bhealach amháin nó bealach eile go fóill.

Living Poetry in Galway

Professor Donna Potts, Washington State University | Visiting Scholar

American poet Professor Donna Potts arrived in Ireland for the first of four visits and found that poetry seemed to be at the centre of everything, from the decoration of airports to the design of banknotes. Recipient of a Fulbright Lecturing Award to University of Galway from 1997 to 1998, she found herself immersed in a culture where poetry seemed inseparable from daily life. She returned to Galway several times, drawn to the landscape that once inspired James Joyce. In those fleeting moments, the division between art and life had “faded utterly”.   Cois Coiribe had the chance to connect with Prof Potts and ask her what it was about Galway that consistently drew her back, inspiring her creative work as well as volumes on poet Francis Harvey, environmentalism, and Irish literature and trauma. Here she describes her dreamlike visits and explains how, for her, poetry became empowerment.

Críocha an Chroí—An Artist’s Return to the Heartland

Christina McBride

A residency in the University of Galway’s Gaoth Dobhair Centre in 2022–23 allowed Glasgow visual artist Christina McBride to explore the natural and built environment of her mother’s homeplace in nearby Bun an Inbhir in a series of analogue photographs developed using local fauna and peatland materials. McBride’s residency in Donegal and the resulting exhibition, Críocha an Chroí / Heartland—was made possible by a partnership involving the University, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Ealaín na Gaeltachta and the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny. In autumn 2023, a second exhibition, Thall Udaí / Over By, focusing on the people of the place, was mounted in Sean-Scoil Bhun an Inbhir and a third is planned for Glasgow in 2024.

How Do We Value Creativity After AI?

Imagining the Creative University

Professor Rebecca Braun

Waning confidence in progress narratives and declining imaginative capacity, among other factors, have led us to what national policy advisor and professor, Geoff Mulgan calls “a deficit of social imagination”. At the heart of this crisis, as articulated by Professor Rebecca Braun, is the need to imagine alternative ways of being on a collective scale, through the circulation of knowledge. If universities, as knowledge communities, are to play a major role in this quest, how might the creative university of the future operate?
